PROSPECTING 101 - YOUTH OUTREACH

Youth Education

WTGS was proud to sponsor Intro to Prospecting 101 with a side of Petroleum Geology at Rusk Elementary.

As part of the WTGS Youth outreach initiative helmed by 1st VP Adam Ball and representatives from Arrington Oil and Gas, Tom Fekete and Hunter Manley, organized a demonstration on finding oil in Conventional Reservoirs.  WTGS President-Elect Steven Harbison was in attendance as a volunteer to help assist almost 60 Students.

Tom led the class explaining how reservoirs can be formed and the tools and trends you can see to help identify potential Oil wells based on the success or failure of the surrounding wells. Much to the kid’s delight (and teacher’s horror) we traded sand and shale for Chocolate and Vanilla cake hidden by sugary frosting. With our guidance, the students formed their guidelines around potential drill locations laid out on a piece of paper and worked independently to decide what locations would strike oil (Vanilla Cake) or be a dry hole (Chocolate Cake). With varying levels of confidence, volunteer students would punch their holes into the cake using a clear straw. Whether the student pulled the straw out to exclamations of joy when oil was struck, or resounding levels of disappointment when left with a dry hole, the kids were clearly engaged and having fun.
